It’s-a-Me, Mario! Happy 25th to the Super Plumber!

Get ready to feel old: Super Mario turns 25 this year!  That’s right, the little plumber that could has been around now for a quarter of a century.  Who knew that the slightly chubby “Jumpman” character from the Donkey Kong arcade game would find such popularity that it would become a cultural icon?

Nintendo knows a good thing when it sees it – and more importantly, knows how to market it!  This year Nintendo has put together a nifty little advertising campaign to remind everyone of their love for Mario, including adding an anniversary celebration page to their website.  You can have a look at it here:

So pull out your old copies of Mario Bros for the Atari 2600 or Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System, give a quick thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto for his imagination, and let the retrogaming commence!

  3. The question is how best to celebrate this day, friend. The obvious choice is to play a ton of Super Mario Bros. as you suggested but what else might we be able to come up with to honor Mario?

    • I haven’t decided yet on whether I’ll go annoy a big ape into throwing things at me or start randomly smacking my head on boxes in the hopes they contain power-ups. Or I might just go play a few games and then fix the plugged up drain in the bathroom to keep my Princess Peach happy. 😉
